Abstract

This research comprises of the interpersonal analysis of Pervaiz Musharraf’s speech for investigating his perception of peace. Being the leader of a country like Pakistan, which has been facing external and internal peace problems since its birth and especially after 9/11, it became imperative for him to talk about peace and eliminationof terrorism. This study tries to uncover Musharraf’s peace perception (paradigm) in his speech he delivered at the UN General Assembly. Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar is used as a theoretical lens for critical discourse analysis. Though there are multipletheories of peace, but Galtung’s theory of positive and negative peace paradigms is selected for this purpose. In this research study the researcher has used Halliday’s Interpersonal Meta-function to analyze Galtung’s Positive and Negative peace paradigms. This, research willfacilitate other researchers who have interest in peace studies to do further investigation in this less explored side of peace. After the detailed analysis it is observed that different aspects of interpersonal meta-functional aspects like mood, modality, polarity and attitude have diverse roles in developing the theme of peace.
