THE ROLE OF JAMES ABBOTT AS ASSISTANT TO RESIDENT IN HAZARA
Abstract
The present research analyzes the character and achievements of Sir James
Abbott as Assistant Resident of British rule in Hazara. Being in that capacity,
he has left profound impacts on the history and culture of the region.
History of Hazara is incomplete without discussing the role of James Abbott.
At the time of his arrival as Assistant to Resident, the local tribesmen were
busy against the Sikh Rule. He organized them against the terrine with the
main objective to protect the Colonial interest yet his role in managing the
local strength cannot be overlooked. The basic objective of the study is to
study his life and works in the focused context of his contributions to the
region of Hazara. Current research has mainly been conducted through
primary and secondary sources including interviews, e. books, available
official records, and historical documents from archives, offices and
libraries.. This paper critically discusses his role as Assistant to Resident
and especially his efforts for the betterment of the locals and for Hazara
region. It also throws light on how he won the hearts and minds of the
public and paved the way for the establishment of British rule in Hazara.
